The Catalan Radio and Television Corporation had planned to launch a second television channel, initially called TV4, and later renamed Canal 33.

In 1996, in order to boost the channel, the broadcasting hours were extended and the corporate image was also changed, simplifying it, although its characteristic symbol, the rotated 33, remained.

2001–present[]
On May 7, 2001, Canal 33 officially changed its name to El 33.
