In 1983, James Hardie Industries and Hanna-Barbera corporate parent Taft Broadcasting reorganized the division as Taft-Hardie Group Pty. Ltd.

In 1984, the company established a division in Los Angeles known as Southern Star Productions, headed by Buzz Potamkin.

In 1988, Neil Balnaves led an A$11 million management buyout of Taft-Hardie, reorganizing the company as the Southern Star Group. In doing so, the company went from making cartoons to related Australian programming. The segmented star symbol was introduced with the two texts "SOUTHERN" and "STAR" appearing underneath it, and underneath the texts is an underline coloured in grey.

On 11 December 2013, it was announced that the Southern Star Group would be rebranded into a Dutch television production company under the name Endemol Australia, to end Southern Star's 41-year legacy. This would later take effect within 3 months later. On 26 July 2015, both Endemol Australia and Shine Australia merged into one entity by the name of Endemol Shine Australia.
