Enix was founded on September 22, 1975, as Eidansha Boshu Service Center by Japanese architect-turned-entrepreneur Yasuhiro Fukushima.

On November 26, 2002, Enix announced that it would merge with its main rival company, Square. The new company, Square Enix, was officially formed on April 1, 2003, with Enix being the surviving company.
