WAFB originally signed on April 19, 1953, as the first television station in Baton Rouge, and the second television station in the state of Louisiana. Louis S. Prejean and associates (Modern Broadcasting of Baton Rouge) were the first owners of the station, and they sold it to Royal Street Corporation of New Orleans in 1956, which owned WDSU-TV. Originally broadcasting an analog signal on UHF channel 28, the station has always been primary a CBS affiliate.

WAFB moved down to channel 9 in 1960. Future sister WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi moved to channel 7 to accommodate this switch. Four years later, Royal Street sold the station to locally based Guaranty Corporation.

In 1988, Guaranty sold the station to AFLAC. Coincidentally, the call letters of the station, WAFB, also spelled out their new owner: American Family Broadcasting.

In 1997, AFLAC sold its entire broadcasting division, including WAFB, to Raycom Media. Channel 9 would later gain a sister station when Raycom acquired WBXH-CA. As of 2024, this logo is still be seen at the station's studio grounds.
