On August 4th, 2014, after a major financial scandal involving the bank, its parent company and its CEO Ricardo Salgado, the Bank of Portugal announced the split of Banco Espírito Santo into two separate entities: the bank's toxic assets remained on the "old BES" and its healthy assets were transferred to the "new BES", being named Novo Banco (English: New Bank).
