The Olympic and Paralympic Torches for Beijing 2022 were unveiled on 5 February 2021.[1] The torches were both given the name, 'Flying' (飞扬). They were unveiled at a special ceremony one year out from the planned date of the Olympic opening ceremony. The designer responsible for the designs was Li Jianye; a seasoned Chinese designer with experience working with Motorola, Philips and Alibaba Group. He was chosen from a pool of 182 potential designs, as part of an international contest.

To date, Beijing will be the first city to host a Summer and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. This fact is reflected in multiple ways throughout the identity of the games, as well as in the torches. Design cues from the Beijing 2008 torch and cauldron are present; such as the colour scheme and the shape of the upper portion.

“By using the same color combination and by sharing similar artistic elements with the 2008 torch, we aim to extend auspicious greetings to the world as we did at the Summer Games and to showcase Beijing’s rich Olympic culture,”
Li Jianye

The construction of the torch is reminiscent of two intertwined ribbons. The inner ribbon is either red or gold for the Olympic or Paralympic Torch respectively, and the outer ribbon is silver-plated. The duotone colouring conveys 'fire and ice', and the game's promise of light and warmth for the nature of winter sports. The shape of the upper portion also allows for two torches to interlock which transferring the flame. Other inspirations for the shape include an unfurling plant, snow tracks left by skis and snowboards and the Great Wall of China.

The handle area of the torch is adorned with snowflakes morphing into traditional Chinese cloud patterns. Both torch designs have the emblems of their respective events badged in their mid-section, complying to the appropriate colours. The Paralympic Torch also has 'Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games' in braille engraved on the base.
