Canal 9 (informally known as Canal 9 TVN Señal 2) was the secondary channel of Televisión Nacional de Chile between 1986 and 1990.

The story of Canal 9 began in 1982, when Televisión Nacional de Chile was awarded Santiago's Channel 9 concession. The Channel 9 concession was historically used by the Universidad de Chile for the current Chilevisión; however, in April 1980, that network officially moved to Channel 11, leaving Channel 9 off-air until the creation of Canal 9 TVN Señal 2. Though the concession was awarded in 1982, the channel wouldn't go on-air until 1986.

Canal 9 began broadcasting on 3 June 1986, under the name Frecuencia 9. During its first year, broadcasts of Canal 9 were stated as "experimental".

1987–1990[]

The new logo and name were introduced in 4 May 1987, becoming officially Canal 9 Señal 2 de TVN.

Canal 9's schedule and programming imitated that of European TV corporations like the BBC in the United Kingdom, including clock IDs with no sponsors (other TV channels in Chile had clocks, but always tied with a sponsorship) and its own newscast at 10:30 PM. However, the channel shared its profits with the main TVN at Channel 7, and as the main channel struggled due to the loss in confidence from the people, and because (after returning to democracy) the Chilean Government began prohibiting any network from having 2 TV channels in the same broadcasting area, Canal 9 signed off on 24 August 1990. Canal 9 would be replaced on 23 October of the same year by Megavisión, the first private TV channel in Chile.

In addition of Channel 9 in Chile, TVN had another 21 concessions awarded for its secondary channel in the rest of Chile, but the struggles faced at the end of the 1980s prevented the channel from broadcasting outside of Santiago. TVN wouldn't have a secondary channel again until 2020 with the creation of TV Educa Chile, which became the official secondary channel in 2021 with the launch of NTV.
