Instagram was originally a project known as Burbn. It was meant as a mobile check-in application. Due to low popularity, the app became defunct in 2010 with its photo sharing features spun-off to the new app, Instagram.

On May 2, 2013, Instagram introduced a new custom-made wordmark designed by Mackey Saturday.
On May 11, 2016, the wordmark's color was changed to black, following the launch of a new user interface and icon.

Along with the new, brighter Instagram icon introduced on May 16, 2022, a new brand typeface named Instagram Sans was introduced in multiple styles, to be used in Reels and Stories. This wordmark was initially revealed as a logo evolution image, but it was later clarified that the 2016 wordmark will continue to be used.
