Matahari Department Store (simply known as Matahari) was founded in 1958 by Hari Darmawan (1940–2018) as a small children clothing store in Pasar Baru, Jakarta. Later in 1972, it was transformed into a first modern department store chain in Indonesia.
The symbol was retained until 2011. However, the formerly-related Taman Wisata Matahari theme park in Bogor continued using the symbol until 2019, when the park was renamed to TWM Park.
