WAVY-TV began operations on September 1, 1957. It was originally owned by Tidewater Teleradio along with WAVY radio (1350 AM, now WGPL). It originally signed on as an ABC affiliate, but traded network affiliations with WVEC (channel 13), becoming an NBC affiliate since.

WAVY was purchased by LIN Media in 1968, becoming the company's second television station in its portfolio.

The "Area" was a reference to the "Area" branding for WAVY's newscasts, then known as "Area 10 Eyewitness News". For a time during the 1970s; WAVY's then-parent company LIN Broadcasting used "Area" as part of the newscast names, such as KXAS-TV using the branding of "Area 5 Texas News"

WAVY-TV moved into its current studio in Wavy Street in April 1989, and at some time in September 1989 it introduced its current logo, another reference to both the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.
