WJRT-TV signed on the air on October 12, 1958, originally under the ownership of Goodwill Stations, which owned WJR (760 AM) in Detroit. It has been an ABC affiliate since its inception.
196?–1969[]
Goodwill Stations merged with Capital Cities Broadcasting in 1964, but WJRT-TV was spun off to Poole Broadcasting.

1975–1979[]
In 1978, WJRT along with the rest of Poole Broadcasting (which included WPRI-TV in Providence, Rhode Island and WTEN in Albany, New York) were sold to Knight Ridder.
1979–1982[]
1982–1994[]
WJRT was sold to SJL Broadcasting in 1988.
1994–1997[]

WJRT was purchased by ABC in 1994, which united with former Capital Cities stations WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, KTRK-TV in Houston. WTVD in Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville, and KFSN-TV in Fresno, all of which mentioned were part of the Capital Cities-ABC merger in 1986.
1997–present[]
SJL Broadcasting repurchased WJRT and WTVG in Toledo back in 2011, then in turn sold to Gray Television three years later. When Gray announced it would acquire the Local Media stations of Meredith Corporation for $2.7 billion, which owns rival WNEM-TV (channel 5) in Bay City, Gray sold WJRT to Allen Media Broadcasting.
