Originally signed on the air as WOW-TV on August 29, 1949 on VHF channel 6, the station was first owned by Radio Station WOW, Inc., alongside WOW radio (590 AM, now KXSP, and 92.3 FM, now KEZO-FM). The Meredith Corporation purchased the WOW stations in 1951.

In 1956, after the radio stations dropped their longtime affiliation with the NBC Red Network in favor of the CBS Radio Network, WOW-TV switched affiliations with KMTV-TV and became Omaha's CBS television affiliate.

WOW-TV changed its callsign on July 9, 1975, to the current WOWT, after Meredith sold channel 6 to San Francisco-based Chronicle Publishing Company and then-FCC rules prohibiting the use of the same callsigns by different owners of the time.

WOWT swapped affiliations again with KMTV-TV on June 29, 1986, returning the NBC affiliation back to channel 6 after 30 years.
WOWT introduced a 3D variation of the previous logo, which it would phase out of branding sometime in 2019.
