In the fall of 1988, Emmis purchased WYNY from NBC, as well as the license of WNBC-AM, which would be shut down. On September 22, 1988, at 5:30 pm, the stations swapped frequencies. WYNY was moved to 103.5 FM, while WQHT's rhythmic contemporary format moved to 97.1 FM and became "Hot 97." At the time it broadcast what it announced as From the Top of the Empire State Building until it was switch the format in 1994.

In April 2011, WQHT became New York City's only rhythmic contemporary station with the reverting of rival WKTU to Rhythmic AC/CHR.
