The First National Bank of Birmingham was founded on April 24, 1884 as the merger of the National Bank of Birmingham and City Bank.

The economic downturn of 1893 led to the bank’s failure in August of that year, but with a new president it resumed operations in October.

In 1972, the bank established a holding company, Alabama Bancorporation.

Alabama Bancorporation changed its name to AmSouth in 1981. At this time, the name of each of their banks would be a subtitle to the AmSouth logo in ads. In March 1983, First National and several other sister banks merged into AmSouth Bank.
