Formica is the name of both a popular brand of laminate construction material and the United States-based firm that originated it in 1913, Formica Products Company. Currently the product is made by the New Zealand-based Formica Group.

Original logo, 1913

Original Formica logo, 1913

This was the logo originally used when Daniel J. O'Conor and Herbert A. Faber formed the Formica Products Co. in 1913, after patenting the resin-based coating they had invented while previously employed by Westinghouse. It was originally meant to serve as insulating material for electrical wiring, as an alternative to mica which was then generally used (hence the name, "for mica").

Formica updated logo, 1930s

1930s updated logo

This logo was an updated version of the original, used from 1927 onward as Formica became available in colored and pattern-printed sheets for other uses such as countertop and furniture surface coverings. The arc of the top of the F was made more pronounced, and the letters after the F became taller and heavier.

New Formica logo, 1960s

New Formica logo, 1960s

This logo was introduced in the 1960s and was the precursor of the logo currently in use. The pin-striped left side and top of a serif letter F are combined with the product name in serif text as a crosspiece to form the initial of the brand name.

This is the logo that has been in use since the mid-1970s. The frame of the F is now solid, and a sans-serif font (resembling a slightly extended form of Helvetica) has replaced the 1960s serif font used for the brand name. The words "Brand" and "laminated plastic" have been eliminated.
