During the company's bankruptcy, Furr's Supermarket bought Safeway's El Paso/Albuquerque division in 1987. On May 2nd, 1990, the Safeway and The Food Emporium divisons in El Paso and New Mexico rebranded to Furr's. After the acquisition, annual sales increased to around $2 billion.
2000–2001[]

As of the start of 2001, Furr's Supermarket had 71 locations all over West Texas and New Mexico, with one more starting construction. However, on February 8th, 2001, Furr's Supermarket filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Later on, it converted to Chapter 7, which lead to the closure of all stores and cease of the company. Many blame the bankruptcy to their leadership and competition to Wal-Mart. Some stores were purchased by Smith's, Lowe's, and independent grocery stores. The rest remained closed for good.
