The Game Boy was released on April 21, 1989, in Japan as Nintendo's first handheld game console and considered a successor to the Game & Watch. It's graphics and sound are similar to the Nintendo Entertainment System, but in black and white with a pea soup green tint.

Despite releasing its last European game (Reservoir Rat) on December 30, 1998, its last North American game (Pokémon Yellow) on October 19, 1999, and its last Japanese games (Shikakei Atama o Kore Kusuru: Kanji no Tatsujin and Keisan no Tatsujin) on March 30, 2001, the console was still in production until March 23, 2003.
