On January 16, 2019, Sony Pictures announced that a sequel of Ghostbusters II is in production after almost 30 years and it would be released in July 10, 2020, continuing from Ghostbusters II.

The film was originally set to release on July 3, 2020, March 5, 2021, and June 11, 2021, but it was moved to November 11, 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
