This alternate logo, with the rugby union's coat of arms encased in a frame resembling a stylised version of the Ellis Park - their home stadium - seen from above, was used in matchday programmes throughout the 1980s.

The Transvaal team renamed itself to the Lions - a popular nickname for the club - after the Transvaal Province (whose largest city is the team's home city of Johannesburg) was renamed to Gauteng Province.
