Grand Union's Canadian division was sold to Steinberg's in 1959. Grand Union would later acquire Colonial Stores and its subsidiary Big Star Foods in 1978.

Grand Union adopted the "Red Dot" logo in January 1980. They would acquire Weingarten's the same month, who would adopt their own Glaser-designed red dot logo two months later. Big Star Foods would follow suit in April 1981, though cobbled together from existing glyphs from Grand Union's logo.

Grand Union would cease operations in Florida in February 1984. Grand Union's entered its third bankruptcy in 2000. With no money left to supply or maintain its stores, it was acquired by C&S Wholesale Grocers, its supplier and largest creditor, in 2001.

In the process of selling off most of Grand Union's remaining locations, 25 stores in Vermont, New York, and Pennsylvania were remodeled into the Grand Union Family Market format.

Upon Tops' merger with Price Chopper in 2021, the company was ordered to shed some of its stores to meet legal requirements. C&S bought all twelve and announced their imminent rebranding to Grand Union stores, reviving the name after nine years. The first locations opened in January 2022.
