The service launched as Viking Gold on November 1st 1988. It then took over the AM frequencies of Pennine Radio & Radio Hallam to form Yorkshire Classic Gold which launched on May 1st 1989, the first Classic Gold service in the UK, long before the GWR service.

On January 7, 2019, the Bauer City 2 network and its stations in England were rebranded to Greatest Hits Radio.
On August 31, 2020, Greatest Hits Radio was replaced with a relay of Magic, ahead of KCFM's rebrand on September 1, 2020. The station was relaunched on DAB on September 19, 2022, following the launch of Nation Radio East Yorkshire.
