On July 9, 2019, WarnerMedia (now Warner Bros. Discovery) unveiled HBO Max as the name of its new streaming service. Anchored with and inspired by the legacy of HBO’s excellence and award-winning storytelling, the new service will be “maximized” with an extensive collection of exclusive original programming (Max Originals) and the best-of-the-best from the conglomerate's enormous portfolio of beloved brands and libraries.[1]

On May 23, 2023, HBO Max in the United States was renamed and replaced with Max. The HBO Max branding remained active in Latin America until February 27, 2024, and will remain active in most of Europe until May 21, 2024, and the rest of Europe until June 2024.

The service will retain its name in the Netherlands and Belgium (where it will be launched in June 2024), in order to avoid confusion with NPO member broadcaster Omroep MAX and with VRT's streaming platform, VRT MAX.[3][1] On March 21, 2024, the service unveiled a new logo adopting the logo of the Max brand used in other parts of the world, whilst using the HBO logo, similarly to the previous HBO Max logos. The rebrand will take effect in June 2024.[4]
