Qindao-Liebherr was founded in 1984 as a joint venture between China's Qindao Refrigerator Co. and West German heavy equipment and appliance company Liebherr.

In 1991, Qindao-Liebherr changed its name to Qindaohaier, the "Haier" part derived from the shortening of Liebherr's Chinese name "利勃海尔", to just its last two characters "海尔".
