Harcourt was founded in 1919 as Harcourt, Brace & Howe by then-graduate collegiates, Alfred Harcourt and Donald Brace, along with editor Will David Howe, until he left the company in 1921.
In 1960, Philippine and New York-based publishing company World Book Company (since its headquartered in Manila until moved to New York was founded in 1905; not to be confused with World Book in some disambiguations) was merged to be named Harcourt, Brace & World until 1970.

In 1970, the company was renamed Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ), named after William Jovanovich, who had became a president of the company in 1954.
1982–1993[]

In 1993, the company was restored to Harcourt, Brace & Company to its publishing division as Harcourt Brace has no comma until at the end of the year it divested its cinema division.
