Heroin was a brand of diamorphine owned and sold by German pharmaceutical company Bayer. The company stopped producing the drug in 1913 due to issues regarding how addictive it is. In 1919, Bayer lost some of its trademark rights to Heroin (as well as Aspirin) under the Treaty of Versailles following the defeat of Germany in World War I. "Heroin" has since become a genericized term for diamorphine.
