The first Holiday Inn was built in 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee. The signs at first also included both "Hotel" and "Courts" to imply that it was upscale, and to connect it with competing independent motels.[1]

In the Mid 1950s, Holiday Inn dropped the word Courts and replaced Hotel with the more modern "Motel" as a way to emphasize that Holiday Inn's pricing was competitive with other motels.[1]
