The Hostess Cakes brand was founded by the Taggart Baking Company of Indianapolis, Indiana in 1921. In 1925, Continental Baking Company bought Taggart. The sale included the Hostess and Wonder Bread brands.

In 2009, after emerging from bankruptcy, IBC became Hostess Brands, named after the snack cakes. In 2012, the company started liquidating its properties, and the now-discontinued company became Old HB. Then in 2013, Old HB's cake business was sold to a "new" Hostess Brands, and on July 15 of that year, brands like Hostess officially returned.
