In August 2013, a United States federal court found the website to be in violation of copyright law. On December 4, 2013, Hotfile settled a $4 million settlement with the Motion Picture Association of America and ceased operations. The domain is now owned by the MPA, and it redirects to a page on the MPA website explaining why copyright matters.
