In 1918, House of Fabergé was nationalized by the Bolsheviks. As a result, Gustav's family members which had owned the company moved to Paris, France to launch a new jewelry firm known as Fabergé & Cie.
In 1937, a company by the name of Fabergé, Inc. was established, illegally using the Fabergé name. The Fabergé family did not find out about this unauthorized use of their brand until after World War II had ended. Unable to afford protracted and expensive litigation, the Fabergé family and Fabergé, Inc. settled out of court in 1951 for US$25,000 (approximately US$281,859 today) for the company to continue using the Fabergé name in connection with perfume.
