The number of bars was reduced from 13 to the current 8 bars in 1972. The 8 bar logo has been rumored to represent 8 bits; however, Rand simply used lines to imply "speed & dynamism."

In 1981, a variation of the 1972 logo, which IBM nicknamed "the IBM Rebus", was introduced. As a pun on the company's name, it contains an eye, a bee, and a separate M in the corporate font.
