The number of bars was reduced from 13 to the current 8 bars in 1972 by designer Paul Rand. The 8 bar logo has been rumored to represent 8 bits, however, Rand simply used lines to imply "speed & dynamism."

The 1956–1967 logo was reintroduced, but in a box.
