Idemitsu Kosan went with an agreement to acquire Royal Dutch Shell's 33.24% stake in Showa Shell for about 170 billion yen ($1.44 billion) from Royal Dutch Shell on April 1, 2019, causing the company to acquire/merge with Showa Shell, while Royal Dutch Shell held a 1.6% stake in Showa Shell. The company retained its current name but its trading name changes to Idemitsu Showa Shell.
