Instagram began life as a project known as Burbn. It was meant as a mobile check-in application. Due to low popularity, the app became defunct in 2010 with its photo sharing features spun-off to the new app, Instagram. On October 6, 2010, for the first time, the Burbn app's non-web prototype was launched for iPhone OS (now iOS) on the Apple App Store. This was the final prototype before the official release. Since the app was available on the App Store at that time, some people sometimes confuse this date with the actual release date.
