Topeka Inn Management was founded in 1969 by Robert Brock and Edwin Lindquist as the first, and at one point the largest, Holiday Inn franchisee in the United States. TIM began a Pizza Time Theatre franchising division called Pizza Show Biz after talks with founder Nolan Bushnell in June 1979, though they would go back on their agreement in November of that year. After meeting with Aaron Fechter of Creative Engineering, Inc., TIM would found their own chain, ShowBiz Pizza, in March 1980.

The company’s headquarters would move from Topeka, Kansas to Irving, Texas in 1982. Brock would later acquire ShowBiz' competitor Pizza Time Theatre, Inc. (operator of Chuck E. Cheese's) in May 1985, and the Monterey House chain of restaurants in July 1987.
