In 1980, the tournament permanently moved to Japan as a result of sponsorship from Toyota, from the 1980 edition onwards, the competition will be one-legged and uses its alternative name - the "Toyota European/South American Cup" - in promotional material.

The competition was last held in 2004. The following year, FIFA merged this with their previous Club World Championship to become the FIFA Club World Championship - Toyota Cup, or as it is known today, the FIFA Club World Cup. Japan was still given the duty to host the tournament until 2009, and Toyota was still one of the tournament's main sponsors until 2015, when, coincidentally, the tournament returned to Japan.
