JTBC was launched in 2011 as a second incarnation of Tongyang Broadcasting Company (TBC), the defunct television network that was forced by the military-backed South Korean regime to merged with the state-run Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) to become KBS2 in 1980.

The "J" stands for JoongAng Ilbo (the owner) and "TBC" stands for Tongyang Broadcasting Company.
