The first Judy's opened its doors on July 26, 1976. In June 1978, Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers took legal action against Judy's for copying their building plans, décor, furniture, fixtures, and training films through social engineering of Wendy's employees. The similarity of the chain's name was also called into question.

On July 4, 1979, it was announced that Judy's would be renamed, with all stores adopting new menu items, an expanded salad bar, and a new, earth-toned look. The repetition of its name was to symbolize the restaurant being "three times as good" as before. The chain never did as well as before the Wendy's suit and all 15 remaining outlets were closed in December 1981. General Care then sold the properties to Horn & Hardart, to be converted into Bojangles restaurants.
