KATU originally signed on the air on March 15, 1962, as an independent station on VHF channel 2 and was owned-and-operated by Seattle, Washington-based Fisher Communications, who later opted to affiliate the station with ABC, which at the time was seen on KPTV (channel 12).

Fisher Communications rebranded all of their stations with this universal logo design in 2000. Sister stations at the time included KOMO-TV, KIMA-TV, KBOI-TV, KIDK, KLEW-TV, KEPR-TV, and KVAL-TV.
