2001–2006[]
Channel 23 first signed on the air on January 20, 2001, under the callsign KPWB-TV. The station originally maintained a primary affiliation with The WB and a secondary affiliation with UPN. Prior to the launch of the station, The WB programming was available on the superstation feed of the network's Chicago station WGN-TV from the network's launch in 1995 until August 29, 1999, and then to KWKB from its August 30, 1999 sign-on until January 19, 2001. KPWB-TV disaffiliating its secondary affiliation with UPN in 2003 and they subsequently move its programming to NBC affiliate station for that market, WHO-DT.

On January 24, 2006, The WB's parent company Time Warner and CBS Corporation announced the shutdowns of The WB and UPN effective that September. On March 16, 2006, Pappas Telecasting signed an affiliation agreement to make KPWB the market's CW affiliate, then on September 18, 2006 concurrent with launch of the said network, their call sign was changed to KCWI-TV. During the 2009-10 television season, KCWI-TV carries WWE Friday Night SmackDown from MyNetworkTV following the network's disaffiliation from KDMI in 2009.
2013–2016[]

On October 24, 2014, Pappas reached a deal to sell KCWI-TV to Nexstar Broadcasting Group for $3.5 million. The deal separated the station from KDMI, but created a new duopoly with ABC affiliate WOI-DT, by coincidence also licensed to Ames. The deal was approved by the FCC on December 19, 2014, but the completion of the deal was placed on hold due to the lawsuit. The sale was formally completed on March 14, 2016, with the station leave its downtown Des Moines studios and consolidate operations with WOI at that station's West Des Moines facilities as of April 1 of the same year.

On December 18, 2018, station owner Nexstar announced its purchase of Tribune Media, owners of NBC affiliate WHO-DT with sale completed on September 19, 2019, KCWI and WOI-DT was been divested by the company to Tegna as part of an 11-station, $740-million divestiture package with the sale completed on March 20, 2019, making KCWI and WOI-DT as sister stations of WQAD-TV in Davenport.
