The station signed on August 3, 2000 as KBEJ taking the UPN affiliation from NBC-affiliated KMOL-TV (channel 4, now WOAI-TV) and was owned by Corridor Television. Corridor contracted A. H. Belo then-owners of CBS affiliate KENS-TV (channel 5) to operate channel 2.

In 2006, KBEJ was selected as an affiliate of The CW for the San Antonio market. The station changed its callsigns on April 7 of that same year to KCWX in anticipation of the CW's launch.

In 2010, the station became the area's affiliate for MyNetworkTV after its charter San Antonio affiliate, KMYS (channel 35) took over The CW.
