In late 1995, Fitts sold KESQ to the News-Press & Gazette Company. In 1996, KESQ received FCC approval to move its transmitter to a spot in the San Jacinto Mountains to expand its coverage area to San Bernardino and Riverside. However, ABC threatened the station with disaffiliation if it went ahead with the move, fearing it would cut into the market of network-owned KABC-TV (channel 7). The local chapter of the Sierra Club also objected to the move on environmental grounds. These two challenges doomed the proposal.
