The station launched in 1953 as NBC affiliate KFSD-TV and was originally owned by Airfan Radio Corporation which owned NBC Radio Network affiliate KFSD (currently known as KOGO). In 1954, the KFSD stations were sold to investment firm Fox, Wells & Rogers.

In 1961, KFSD-AMFM-TV changed its callsigns to KOGO. In 1962, Time-Life purchaseed the KOGO stations.
1965–1972[]
In 1972, McGraw-Hill purchased the Time-Life stations.
KGTV[]
1972–1977[]
On June 1, 1972, KOGO-TV became KGTV after the radio stations were spun-off.
1977–1986[]
KGTV swapped affiliations with KCST-TV (channel 39, currently known as KNSD) on June 27, 1977 and became San Diego's ABC affiliate. The station gained a new logo to go with the change.
1986-present[]
KGTV revived the Helvetica Black 10 in 1986, but it was now italicized and with an O as opposed to a 0. Shared with KOOL-TV (now KSAZ-TV) in Phoenix, Arizona from 1977 to 1982, WGEM-TV in Quincy, Illinois-Keokuk, Iowa-Hannibal, Missouri from 1987 to 1998, WHEC-TV in Rochester, New York, and KOLR in Springfield, Missouri from 1990 to 2004; with the regular Black Italic 10 seen below.
