This logo, patterned after that of NBC Sports and NBC News at the time, would be retained with only minor alterations until 1986; well after both the station changed call letters to the present KPNX and long after the NBC News logo this logo was patterned after was retired.

In 1979, the station's callsign became KPNX, as the station was no longer co-owned with KTAR radio.

This variant of the 1973-86 logo, with an unserifed "1" in the "12", was short-lived.

In 1992, the "12" logo began to be accompanied by an Arizona state background map. This version was revised many times such as with the 1996 addition of the NBC peacock to the right of the "Arizona 12" logo (it was moved to the "southern border" of the state insignia two years later).
