In 1997, KXXV began launching local newcasts for the Brazos Valley area. The station was renamed to KRHD-LP and moved to channel 34 that same year. However, KRHD's analog channel was interfered with former PBS station KCTF (later known as KDYW) in Waco. In 2002, KXXV and KRHD began affiliating with The WB on a secondary basis after Univision Communications purchased KAKW (channel 62) and converted into a Univision station for the Austin area. The WB would later move to Fox-affiliated KWKT (channel 44) and its Brazos Valley satellite KYLE (channel 28, currently a MyNetworkTV affiliate) in July of that same year.

In 2007, KRHD moved to channel 40. A planned late-2008 sale of the Drewry stations to the London Broadcasting Company fell through due to the late 2000s credit crisis. In 2015, Raycom Media acquired Dewry Communications, including KXXV and KRHD.

In 2018, Gray Television, owners of CBS affiliates KWTX-TV (channel 10) and KBTX-TV (channel 3) announced that it would acquire Raycom Media. Gray decided to retain KWTX/KBTX and sell KXXV/KRHD to a third party. On August 20 of that same year, it was announced that the E. W. Scripps Company would acquire KXXV/KRHD and sister station WTXL-TV in Tallahassee, Florida, for $55 million, from Raycom. The sale was completed on January 2, 2019.
