The station signed on October 24, 1978 as an independent station on channel 20. The station was originally owned by Springfield Television and featured the same logo style used by then-sister stations (and both NBC affiliates at that time) WWLP in Springfield, Massachusetts and WKEF (both on channel 22, the latter station is now an ABC affiliate) in Dayton–Springfield, Ohio.

In 1984, Springfield Television sold its television stations to Adams Communications.
1984–1987[]
During this logo's run, channel 20 became an affiliate of the Fox network on October 9, 1986.
1987–1989[]

On November 9, 1987, KSTU moved from UHF Channel 20 to VHF Channel 13 after the station was bought by a group led by Northstar Communications. In 1989, Fox Television Stations acquired channel 13 from its previous owners which led to KSTU being an owned-and-operated station of the network.

Fox Television Stations sold KSTU and seven other stations to Local TV (operated by Oak Hill Capital Partners) on December 22, 2007, which the sale was finalized on July 14, 2008. In 2013, Tribune purchased Local TV. On May 8, 2017, the Sinclair Broadcast Group announced that it would acquire Tribune Media. Due to Sinclair owning CBS affiliate KUTV (channel 2), MyNetworkTV affiliate KMYU (channel 12) and independent station KJZZ (channel 14). The station was planned to be sold back to Fox. However, the sale was cancelled on August 9, 2018. In December of that same year, Nexstar Media Group announced that it would acquire Tribune Media. Due to Nexstar's ownership of ABC affiliate KTVX (channel 4) and CW affiliate KUCW (channel 30), Nexstar divested KSTU to the E. W. Scripps Company. The sale was completed on September 19, 2019.
