KTVK originally signed on the air on February 28, 1955, as a ABC affiliate. The call sign was originally quoted "Because TV will be our middle name" by former Governor of Arizona, Ernest McFarland.
KTVK became independent on January 9, 1995, after the affiliation swap which saw the ABC affiliation move to Fox affiliate KNXV-TV, with Fox moving to then-CBS affiliate KSAZ-TV, which then sent the CBS affiliation back to then-independent (formerly CBS affiliate back then) station KPHO-TV.
