Originally signed on the air on June 4, 1967 as a primary ABC affiliate on VHF channel 2 and was owned-and-operated by Washoe Empire, a group of nine Reno residents led by KBET radio station general manager Robert Stoddard.

In 1972, after a dispute between KOLO-TV (VHF channel 8) and its affiliated network CBS, channel 2 took over the CBS affiliation for the Reno market.

Bloomington, Indiana-based Sarkes Tarzian, Inc. (a company led by relatives of the namesake founder) purchased KTVN from Washoe Empire for $12.5 million in 1980.

Circle 2

The "Circle 2" logo is also used by ABC affiliate WKRN-TV in Nashville, and NBC affiliate KJRH-TV in Tulsa.
