KUTP began broadcasting in 1985, and it was owned by United Television, then a subsidiary of Chris-Craft Industries.

KUTP-TV became a charter affiliate of UPN January 15, 1995.

Following the announcement of the shut down of UPN (whose programming would be merged with The WB to form The CW), all Fox-owned UPN stations, including KUTP, dropped the UPN name and logo from their on-air branding. KUTP replaced the UPN logo with "PHX" (the airport code for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport), and changed its branding to "PHX 45".

On August 7, 2017, KUTP rebranded as "Fox 10 Xtra".
