KTHI-TV became an NBC affiliate on August 22, 1983, sending ABC to WDAY-TV (channel 6) and WDAZ-TV (channel 8). In 1995, KTHI-TV was sold to was sold to Meyer Broadcasting (owner of KFYR-TV in Bismarck and its sister stations).

KTHI-TV became KVLY-TV on May 2, 1995. This basic design has remained the only logo used by the station as KVLY-TV. In 1997, Meyer Broadcasting sold its television stations to Sunrise Television.

1997–2006[]
In 2002, Sunrise sold its North Dakota stations (including KVLY-TV) to the Wicks Group. In 2003, KVLY-TV began operating then-CBS affiliate KXJB-TV (channel 4, now a Cozi TV/MyNetworkTV/BEK Prime/NewsNet affiliate as KRDK-TV) under a local marketing agreement.

Hoak Media bought all of Wicks' television stations (including KVLY-TV) in 2009.

After the merger of KVLY and KXJB, the newscasts began jointly identifying themselves as "Valley News Live" or newscasts. For network programming, Syndicated programming, and individual station promotions, the individual logo is still displayed. In 2013, Hoak announced that it would sell most of its stations, including KVLY-TV to Gray Television. The sale was completed on June 13 of that year and Gray acquired KXJB's non-license assets as a result of KXJB-TV's license assets being sold to Major Market Broadcasting.
