In 1978, the station was sold to Carson Broadcasting, a company owned by talk show host and entertainer Johnny Carson, who visited the station fairly often. Under Carson's ownership, the station often ran R-rated theatrical films uncut during the late-night and early morning hours; while the afternoon (1:00 p.m.) and evening (9:00 p.m.) movies would always be different, the same film would be run uncut in the evening and aired in its censored form in the afternoon, but not on the same day.

The Des Moines-based Meredith Corporation purchased channel 5 in 1985.

Shortly after Meredith's takeover, it adopted a logo design, which was borrowed from its new sister stations KCTV in Kansas City, KPHO-TV in Phoenix, WNEM-TV in Bay City, Michigan and until 1993, WTVH in Syracuse, New York. Both KVVU-TV and WNEM-TV continued using the "5" portion of this logo until 2002 and 2004, long after each of those other stations had discontinued using the stylized "tv5" logo (WTVH doing so after being sold by Meredith in 1993 for example).
